What happens to leather when it gets wet? why is it bad?

alright well i was thinking of buying a latigo leather lace which are those thin strips of leather. and wrapping it around the end of my wrist and making some sorta cool bracelet with it but thats not the point. The point is if i get it wet will it like break and like get all hard or will it like build up mold in between it and my skin? like i dont wanna waste money on something that might not work or that could make my skin look weird. thanks!

why?
"It can become cracked, brittle, and I think it shrinks and ruins its shape. So don't do it, go to the drycleaners, I used to work at one and lots of people have ruined nice coats, clothes, etc by attempting to wash them."
