The scale of tone relates from completely colorless to completely black, from light all the way through to dark. The stones that are the priciest fall in the range between medium ranged light to medium ranged dark.

Lastly, you want to take the saturation of color into consideration. Saturation can be defined as the purity of color of the gemstone. A gemstone that has no gray or brown discoloration has a high saturation rate and is much more valuable than ones that are lower in saturation. Saturation can affect the way a gemstone is cut and the cut is another very important factor when gemstones are priced. If you are looking to buy an excellent gemstone, try to find one with a saturated color as it is more valuable and will allow for a better cut. This cut will aid in the consistency of the color and help to hide any inclusions within the stone in question. Although cut is extremely important, it is the color and the qualities within that can determine the cut of each individual gemstone.

considering a colored stone in engagment ring?

my fiance is letting me pick out my engagment ring and i want something unique. i was thinking of getting a colored stone in the middle and regular white stones (diamonds) on the band. i would like the main stone to be a gemstone, not sure what kind/color yet. does anyone else have a gemstone ring? any pics?
