I want my guitar to sound like the 50's/60's 'surfer' bands...how?

I don't actually have said guitar yet. Is there a specific model I should consider, or is it all in the way you tune it? I am a begginer learning on an acoustic, and plan on an electric upgrade later in the year. Cost is a consideration- so please don't reccomend top end guitars if I can get the same effect with a less expensive brand. If I do become a rich rockstar I'll upgrade to something nicer then ^_^

Ooooh...I didn't realize how detailed this was going to get. ^_^ Uh yeah I know titles better than artists- songs like Wipeout, Outer Limits, Endless Summer, performers like Dick Dale, Jan & Dean, The Beach Boys are some of my faves. Let's say I want to emulate DickDale's sound specifically, but without using the exact same brands of amp/guitar. Websites with info on famous player's setups would be interesting and helpful too.

There is no one answer. Dick Dale played a Fender Strat through a Showman amp, strung upside down with very heavy gauge strings. The Ventures played Mosrites (based in Bakersfield). Most surf music featured lots of reverb. If you edit your question to include more specifics about exactly what/who's sound you are after, we can probably give you more helpful answers.

Well, the Dick Dale set-up I gave you isn't particularly expensive. You don't need a $25,000 vintage Strat. Any Strat will do, as will any amp with a decent reverb. A tube amp will be a bit more but is going to give you a more original sound than a solid state amp. You can easily find more specifics about Dick's rig and settings than you ever wanted to know all over the net. Start with Wikipedia, but don't assume what you read there is 100% accurate.
